HATCH ACT

A law that prohibits a person employed in an executive government position from engaging in campaigns to elect candidates for public office.

Federal law that makes it unlawful to transport a woman across state or country borders for immoral acts. Also called the White Slave Traffic Act.

PATERNITY PROCEEDING

the name given to a court action that will establish the paternity of a child born out of wedlock. See bastardy proceeding; filiations proceeding.

ON THE MERITS

term used by a court where a decision of the court has been based on presented facts and not technical legal practice.
