A permanent advertisement that is printed on handy small items such as cups, calendars, bags that are given away to remind people of the products.

SPECIALTY GOOD

An item with special qualities such as being unique and extraordinary that people look for them to buy. Items such as designer clothes, famous art work.

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE

The court order that is mandatory where a party must fulfills its contractual obligations according to the exact terms of the contract.

SPECIFIC RETURN

The part of an excess return on assets that are not explained by common factors. Also known as idiosyncratic return.

SPECIFIED CAUSES OF LOSS

Commercial coverage for physical damage that is a narrowly defined policy where specific perils are covered.

SPECTRUM

The range of frequencies of electro magnetic waves.

SPECULATE

1. Financial. Engage in speculation. 2. General. Make an assumption or guess based on small amount of data or none at all.

SPEECH RECOGNITION

Technology enabling computers to recognize spoken words. The sound is digitized and then matched to a pattern stored on the database.

SPEECH SYNTHESIS

Technology that can ‘construct’ speech that replace a human voice. Mainly used to assist blind and sight impaired.

SPEND

1. Pay money for goods and services. See spending. 2. Use of a resource like time for example.

SPENDING PHASE

Part of person’s life where money spent if from existing assets as income has been reduced significantly.

SPENDING PLAN

A budget that comprises all of the department budgets for a period of accounting, project or program.

SPENDING POWER

Granted legislature authority to administration allowing it to spend funds that are public in line with a budget that is approved.

SPENDTHRIFT CLAUSE

Clause stopping the beneficiary’s creditor’s ability to collect benefits before they are received by the beneficiary.

SPENDTHRIFT PROVISION

A condition in trusts barring one or more beneficiaries from pledging or spending benefits before they are received.

SPIFF

Slang term. The sum of money that is paid by the vendor’s salesman to the retailer’s salesman for motivation to push the goods of the vendor.

SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

MSDS, Material Safety Data Sheet, term covering equipment, precautions and methods to control and cleanup after a spill or leak.
