Dividing retail store activities into four major areas or departments as a management technique: (1) merchandising – responsible for buying and selling, (2) accounting and control, (3) store management, and (4) publicity. First used in 1927, the traditional management model of direct line authority and responsibility and staff advisory and support defined it.
