The standard diagnosis writes itself: antisocial. Avoidant. Can’t handle human contact. An entire genre of commentary exists about people — young ones especially — who treat an incoming call like a smoke alarm.
But before signing the diagnosis, it’s worth knowing what a live conversation actually demands of a human brain — because scientists have measured it with millisecond precision, and the results reframe the whole argument. A phone call isn’t just talking.
It’s a timed event, run at the edge of human performance. And some people have simply noticed.
The 200-millisecond deadline
Here’s the finding that starts everything. When researchers analyzed conversations across ten languages on five continents — from Danish to Yélî Dnye in Papua New Guinea — they found a striking universal: the gap between one person finishing a turn and the other starting theirs is about 200 milliseconds.
Two hundred milliseconds. The length of a single syllable. Roughly an eyeblink. Everywhere on Earth, in every culture ever measured, that’s the deadline conversation runs on — leave a gap much longer and it starts to mean something: hesitation, disagreement, something wrong. As linguist Stephen Levinson notes, 200 milliseconds sits at the limit of human performance for reacting to a simple start signal — sprinters launching off a starting pistol operate on the same clock.
So every casual phone chat you’ve ever had was, structurally, a series of race starts. Nobody experiences it that way, because the machinery runs under the hood. But look at what the machinery has to do to hit that deadline, and the texting person’s whole case assembles itself.
The impossible math, and how the brain cheats
Here’s the problem: composing even a short sentence — retrieving the words, building the grammar, prepping the mouth — takes the brain considerably longer than 200 milliseconds. Speech scientists estimate a complete plan for even a brief utterance can’t be built in much less than a second. Levinson puts the mismatch bluntly: the turn-switching pace is more than threefold faster than language encoding.
The deadline is impossible. So the brain cheats — in the only way available: it starts composing your reply while the other person is still talking, predicting where their sentence is going, drafting your response in parallel, and holding it ready to fire the instant their voice drops.
Sit with what that means. In every live conversation, your attention is split by design — half receiving their sentence, half building yours, simultaneously, at speed, for the entire call. You are never fully listening, and never fully composing. You physically can’t be; the clock forbids it. Conversation is a dual-task run at the ceiling of human capacity — which is why it’s genuinely tiring, why you sometimes “listen” to the last half of a sentence without hearing it, and why the phone version, stripped of the visual cues that help predict turns, can feel like the hardest mode of all.
Most people never notice they’re doing this. But some people — often the thoughtful, precise, slow-cooking thinkers — feel the split acutely. Everyone already knows the feeling this fixes — it’s the perfect reply that arrives an hour after the conversation ended, the thing the French call staircase wit. That reply was always in you. It just needed more than a syllable’s worth of time to assemble, and live conversation is structurally incapable of granting it. Texting is the medium where the staircase reply gets to exist — sent, on time, because “on time” finally means “when it’s ready.”
So the texter isn’t dodging the person. They’re dodging the deadline — and handing you, in exchange, something the phone call could never carry: their actual, fully-assembled thoughts.
The honest split — and the truce
Now, fairness in both directions, because this argument has limits.
There is an avoidant version of text preference, and it looks different from the inside: texting used not to think better but to feel less — every hard conversation deferred, every call dodged, contact itself minimized. The test is simple: does text let you say more than you’d manage out loud — longer, truer, braver messages? That’s the protector. Or is text just where you also say the least? That’s avoidance wearing convenience’s clothes, and it tends to keep the anxiety it’s protecting.
And the call people are right about what calls do that text can’t: warmth in a voice, misunderstandings repaired in seconds instead of festering in read-receipts, the irreplaceable bonding of actual synchrony. Some conversations genuinely need the race clock — it’s what makes them conversations.
So the truce writes itself. Use the phone for connecting and resolving; use text for anything that deserves someone’s best thinking. And if you’re a call person living with a texter, the reframe is the gift: when they say “can we do this over text,” they’re not holding you at arm’s length.
