Definition & Citations:

An investor’s approach to cover future liabilities by purchasing securities with a certain expected rate of return that is determined by the pricing model. Investments such as bonds which have a low uncertainty associated with them are included in the investor’s portfolio. However, it is pension funds and annuities that utilize this strategy more than investors due to the huge involvement of future liabilities.
