What is SECURITIES INVESTOR PROTECTION CORPORATION (SIPC)?

A not for profit corporation that insures the investment accounts that are held by menbers of a brokerage firm. It is insured against insolvency and fraud and covers cash and investment holdings. It is capped at $500,000 per depositor.
